$156Mendocino, CA / Chardonnay / From the Winemakers, "….a special place was found in Champi Vineyard, nestled in a pocket of Redwood Valley in Mendocino. Farmed by Mitch Champi and Mitch alone, this well-kept secret spot is perfect for the bright, generous style of Chardonnay we love to drink.” Redwood Valley’s climate is cooler than surrounding appellations due to a gap in the coastal ridge, which allows cool Pacific air currents to penetrate. These conditions lead to a gradual ripening of fruit that makes Redwood Valley Chardonnay refined and complex. The notable iron-rich Redvine and Manzanita soils of the area also provide character to the wines. The earliest vineyards in Mendocino County were planted here among the ancient redwoods by Italian immigrants. The Champi Vineyard was planted in the 70s by the family. Mitch grafted over to Chardonnay in the late 80s where he has continued to farm organically.
$61Burgundy, France / Chardonnay / After a long professional life in the fashion world of Paris, Pierre Fenals decided to follow his heart and moved to Burgundy to become a winemaker. As is the way with biodynamics, the universe conspired to introduce Pierre to Rudolf Steiner through happenstance. He bought one of Steiner’s book on a whim at a Parisian flea market and thus began his journey from cloth to vine. This path included raising cows and “interning” with Trapet, Lapierre, and Emmanuel Giboulot. In 2002 he purchased his first 2.5 hectares of vines in Maranges and in the Haute Côtes de Beaune. As for the name Belles Lies, it derives from a practice developed by 17th century monks who would dry their barrels and rub them with the lees from the vintage. A fitting technique for a vigneron who is yielding pure, traditional translations of place.
$119Burgundy, France / Chardonnay / The Maison de Nicolay project is an expansion and extension of the legendary Domaine Chandon de Briailles. Whole grapes and un-fermented grape juice are purchased from neighboring vineyards who are certified biodynamic or in the process. After inspecting the grapes during veraison and harvest, a selection is made that can support elevage without added sulphur or yeasts- wines from pure grape must. The grapes ferment and mature in a very old cave, without pumpover, filtration, or sulfur and are bottled by hand.
$108Burgundy, France / Chardonnay / The Béru family has owned the historical domain for 400 years. After the phylloxera crisis, the vineyards were barren until 1987 when Éric de Béru replanted the domain, and in particular, the famous Clos Béru. After his passing, his daughter Athénaïs quit her job in finance and returned to Béru taking over the domaine with her mom Laurence. Athénaïs works organically in the vineyard with biodynamic principles to produce wines that reflect terroir and bring a new meaning to classic Chablis. This is one of the most important vineyards in Chablis, a three hectare monopole farmed biodynamically by Athénaïs and her team. The soil is very shallow, with Kimmeridgian limestone just below… definitely a reference point for the appellation.

$97Burgundy, France / Pinot Noir / This historic estate was established in 1834. Claude de Nicolay took over from her mother as winemaker in 1988 and currently produces wines from one of the Côte d'Or's great terroirs, the hill of Corton and its surrounding villages. Corton is just north of Beaune and it's easy to spot, as it's a big hill with a forest on top bringing a unique biodiversity to the area. Herbicides and pesticides have not been used in the vineyards since the 1980’s and by 2005, the vineyard management was fully biodynamic thanks to Claude’s brother François. The brother-sister team are quite curious and consistently striving with biodynamic practices to acheive the best soil health and expression from their terroir.
